Virtual concert featuring College members and alumni to be streamed on Facebook

"I hope that watching the concert will bring you some pleasure at the end of a challenging term"

Close harmony singing, atmospheric choral pieces and Big Band music will feature in an online concert on Friday 3 July.

The May Concert usually takes place in Chapel at the end of Easter Term to bring the academic year to a close, but this year a virtual concert will be streamed instead to allow people to enjoy St John's music from their own homes. The St John’s Virtual College Concert will take place at 7.30pm and will be streamed on Facebook.

The Virtual College Concert will feature musical highlights filmed in College earlier this year as well as projects that performers have recorded in their own homes over recent months. There will be music from the renowned St John's College Choir, mixed-voice choir St John’s Voices, and female a cappella group Aquila. Charismatic close harmony group The Gentlemen of St John’s will also be performing, as well as the College’s Big Band, members of St John’s Music Society and some of St John’s alumni.

Catering Manager Bill Brogan has put together some cocktail recipes for the occasion so viewers can watch the concert while indulging in a glass of something special.

Andrew Nethsingha, Director of Music at St John’s, said: “I’m very grateful to all the musicians who have contributed to the concert. I do hope that watching it will bring you some pleasure at the end of a challenging term. Very few people have been able to enter College itself; I hope the video footage, filmed on a gloriously sunny day, will mentally transport you back to St John's."

The St John’s Virtual College Concert will last for 80 minutes and will take place on Friday 3 July at 7.30pm. It will be streamed on the Choir's Facebook page and on the College Facebook page, and will be available to watch there after the initial release. A Facebook account is not required to watch the live stream.
