Three Johnians shortlisted for book award

Three Johnians have been shortlisted for the Longman / History Today Book Prize 2013: Dr Hannah Newton, Professor Glyn Parry and Professor Alison Winter.

Dr Hannah Newton, a current College Research Associate, has been shortlisted with her new book The Sick Child in Early Modern England, 1580-1720.

Professor Glyn Parry, former student and currently Professor in Early Modern History at Northumbria University, also appears on the shortlist with his book The Arch Conjuror of England: John Dee. This brings a fourth Johnian name into the list as John Dee - the polymath, humanist and spiritualist - also attended St John's College (matriculated in 1542).

Professor Alison Winter, a former Research Fellow of the College, has been shortlisted for her book Memory: Fragments of a Modern History. Alison Winter is currently an Associate Professor of History at the University of Chicago.

The prize is awarded to an outstanding and accessible history text which is an author’s first or second work, highlighting publications by promising new authors. The winner of the award will be announced in early January.
