Professor James Cowan elected Corresponding Fellow of RSE

Professsor James Cowan, who undertook his PhD studies at St John's, has been elected Corresponding Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE).

Professor Cowan studied for his PhD in Chemistry at the College between 1983 and 1986, and currently holds the position of Professor in the Department of Chemistry in The Ohio State University. His current research interests include understanding the biosynthesis of complex metal cofactors and iron homeostasis, the biological chemistry of the alkali and alkaline earth ions, the design of novel inorganic drug molecules against protein and RNA targets, and the neurochemistry of metal ions. 

The Royal Society of Edinburgh elects outstanding people from a wide range of disciplines to the Fellowship which strives to attain the RSE's founding mission: ‘the advancement of learning and useful knowledge’. Fellows are elected each year in a rigorous nomination process, and 53 new Fellows were announced on 3 March. The Fellowship incudes more than 1500 distinguished individuals from Scotland, the rest of the UK, and beyond.
