Members of St John’s recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours

The Queen’s Birthday Honours List recognises the outstanding achievements of people across the United Kingdom

A Fellow of St John’s has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to scholarship.

Professor Stefan Reif, who has been a Fellow of St John’s since 1988, has been named on the Queen’s Birthday Honours list alongside four other members of St John’s including Honorary Fellow Professor Sheena Radford who was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to molecular biology research.

The Queen’s Birthday Honours List recognises the outstanding achievements of people across the United Kingdom. The list, which this year also honours medical staff, key workers and volunteers who have worked tirelessly during the pandemic, should have been announced on the Queen’s official birthday in June but was delayed because of the coronavirus. The Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2020 awards 1,495 honours in all four nations. 

The following members of St John’s received awards this year:

Sir Donald Runnicles (1976), General Music Director of Deutsche Opera Berlin, was appointed a Knight Bachelor for services to music.

Sir Graham Wrigley (1982), Chair CDC Group PLC, was made a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) for services to international development.

Professor Keith Hawton (1962), Consultant Psychiatrist, Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust and Professor of Psychiatry, University of Oxford, was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to suicide prevention.

Professor Sheena Radford (1984), Astbury Professor of Biophysics, University of Leeds and Honorary Fellow of St John’s, was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to molecular biology research.

Professor Stefan Reif (1976), founder and lately Director, Taylor-Schechter Genizah Research Unit, University of Cambridge, was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to scholarship.
