Johnian opera singer to perform at Pembroke

One of St John’s most celebrated musical alumni, countertenor Iestyn Davies, will perform pieces by Bach, Britten and Schubert in a concert at Pembroke College on Tuesday 6 May.

Iestyn Davies came to St John’s College as a choral scholar in 1999, graduating with a BA in Archaeology and Anthropology in 2002. Since then, he has gone on to develop an international musical career and has been called “the world’s top countertenor” by The Independent. In 2010, he won the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Young Artist of the Year award.

Iestyn is firmly established as one of the greatest opera singers of his generation, and is regularly in demand in concert venues across the globe, including New York’s Metropolitan Opera, London’s Royal Opera House and Milan’s La Scala.

This concert is a rare opportunity to hear Iestyn Davies perform in Cambridge. He will be accompanied by Pembroke’s College Musician, John Middleton, who was described in BBC Music Magazine as “one of the brightest stars in the world of song”.

The full programme of music for the recital can be found on the Pembroke College website.

The concert begins at 8pm on Tuesday 6 May and is held in Pembroke Old Library.

Tickets are £15 (£5 for students) and can be reserved online or bought from Pembroke Porters’ Lodge.
