Across the Cam: College bridges in art & photography

The Library's latest exhibition marks the 300th anniversary of the Kitchen Bridge. Here are a couple of our favourite images from the exhibition.

Earliest depiction of the Bridge of Sighs (1829)

This delightful tiny engraving by Richard Harraden is the earliest depiction of the Bridge of Sighs. Printed in 1829, the year the bridge was built, it is a surprisingly modern portrayal of the river as a place of recreation.

Even those who walk through the College daily may not have noticed the carved panels on the outside of the Kitchen Bridge; they are perhaps best viewed from the water. In George Edward Briggs' photograph we see Father Cam reclining majestically in his river with a book. The Kitchen Bridge itself and the buildings of Third Court are in the background.

The exhibition is on from 15 Feb until 25 April 2013.  For more information and opening hours http://www.joh.cam.ac.uk/exhibitions
