Southampton Psalter Lecture

A lecture on the Southampton Psalter will take place at St John's College on 11 March.

The lecture, entitled 'The Two Lives of an Irish Psalter at St John's College Library', will be given by Professor Pádraig Ó Néill, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, who will discuss the manuscript and its history. The event celebrates the publication of a new edition of the manuscript by Professor Ó Néill.

The Southampton Psalter is St John's oldest complete manuscript, dating back to the early 11th century, and it is one of the College's finest treasures. The book is finely written in Irish miniscule and each Psalm has a decorated initial. The manuscript also contains three full-page pictures, depicting David fighting the lion that attacked his father's flock, the Crucifixion, and David and Goliath.

The lecture will take place on Tuesday 11 March at 6pm in the Main Lecture Theatre in the Divinity School. All members of the College and their guests are welcome to attend.
