Freshers awarded £81,000 in
pre-admissions prizes
"These prizes honour some of our outstanding new students as they arrive at St John’s and they would not be possible without the unfaltering generosity of our alumni"
A group of 15 new undergraduates at St John’s College have been awarded up to £8000 each on the day they arrived in Cambridge to begin their studies.
Prize-winners were selected on the basis of their academic track record, potential and broader financial need. The exceptional new students were invited with their families to a special ceremony at St John’s to mark their achievements.
A total of 13 different prizes were awarded at the ceremony. Most of them were one-off £5000 awards apart from two that were £8000 – the Dirac Prize in Natural Sciences, named after Paul Dirac, the Nobel prize-winning physicist who did his PhD at St John’s, and The Sanger Prize, named after Frederick Sanger, the Nobel prize-winning biochemist who studied Natural Sciences at St John’s.
Dr Annis May Timpson, Director of Education & Senior Tutor at St John’s, said: “At St John’s, we believe passionately in academic excellence and creating opportunities so that a wide range of students can benefit from a Cambridge education. These prizes honour some of our outstanding new students as they arrive at St John’s and they would not be possible without the unfaltering generosity of our alumni.”
