Dr Ulinka Rublack awarded Roland H Bainton Prize

Dr Ulinka Rublack – Director of Studies in History (Part II) at St John’s College – has been awarded the Roland H Bainton Prize for History 2011 for her book Dressing Up: Cultural Identity in Renaissance Europe.

The prize recognises the best book published in English during the preceding year in any historical field from 1450-1660.

Dressing Up focuses on the history of fashion in the period 1400-1800; interlinking the histories of visuality, consumption and identity in new ways. The book shows how clothes changed Renaissance history, and how history can be about clothes.

Dressing Up was also one of six publications longlisted for the Cundill Prize in History, the world's largest non-fiction history book award, which recognises outstanding history books accessible to the wider public. Ulinka’s book was described as a 'stunningly original' publication, which provides 'a gourmet spread for those with a taste for cultural history' (Source: 2011 Cundill Prize Long List).
