Schools Liaison visits in Shropshire

In the last week of November, Andrew Lomas, the Schools Liaison Officer at St John’s, spent three days touring Shropshire. Shropshire is a region associated with the college through the university Area Links Scheme. Five schools were fitted into the three days: William Brookes School (Much Wenlock), Belvidere School (Shrewsbury), Oldbury Wells School (Bridgnorth), Idsall School (Shifnal), and Sir John Talbot’s Technology College (Whitchurch).

The programme for each visit was formulated in discussion with the school, so as to cater to their needs and wishes. Activities included talks, workshops, and informal meetings with students and teachers. The overall aim was to encourage students in the region to consider applying to Cambridge, and to help them take the right steps towards success. It is also hoped that the visits will result in further links with each school.

St John’s is committed to supporting students from all backgrounds at every stage of their potential route towards Cambridge, and is keen to maintain ongoing relationships with schools. The visits made in Shropshire inspired interest among the students involved, and St John’s hopes to welcome some of them on visits to Cambridge in the future.

Unfortunately, several schools could not be included on the visit in November, but plans will be made shortly for a second, similar trip.
